What To Feed?

Too many breeders are suggesting feeding pups an adult kibble to control their growth rate. The problem with this is that you are not supplying the proper ratios of calcium and phosphate when you are not feeding an appropriate diet for a large to giant breed puppy. There have been enough studies done by reputable dog food manufacturers that prove we no longer have to play a guessing game. Large to giant breed dogs do far better on a high quality kibble with a mid range of protein (23-28%), mid fat range (12-18%) and a proper calcium/phosphorus ratio.
There is wonderful information on diet and large/giant breeds listed at The Great Dane Lady website. While I am not advocating her feeding protocol nor the use of supplements, her articles are a great source of information. (I believe if you are feeding a well balanced, high quality kibble there is no need to supplement a "healthy" dog or puppy with anything - period!)

After about one year of age you can start to switch your Mastiff puppy over to an adult food.  An adult variety of those mentioned above would be appropriate. Always check with your breeder if you have any questions concerning feeding or any health related issue.
